I am losing a lot of hair each time I shampoo.
Q. Dear Terry, “I have been approached to have a hair analysis done. I am losing a lot of hair each time I shampoo. In addition to the hair loss, my skin is very dry, my fingernails are splitting and peeling, my eyebrows are getting very thin, and my eye lashes have gaps in the bottom eyelids where there are no lashes. Do you think a hair analysis could tell me why? I thank you for your answer.” — Tammie K., Atlanta, GA
A. Dear Tammie, I can save you time and money – you don’t need the hair analysis. Hair loss can often be an indication of an underactive thyroid.
I would first recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner to rule out the possibility that an underlying condition is causing your symptoms. If everything checks out, I would then suggest trying the following nutrients.
A combination of iodine with the amino acid L-tyrosine could be extremely beneficial. I’d recommend taking 1-2 capsules of this blend at breakfast. This will provide the raw materials necessary for your thyroid glands to make healthy amounts of thyroid hormone.
Diet is also extremely important – you would do better with more proteins and fats, and less carbohydrates and sugar in your diet. Dietary restrictions would also include avoiding all gluten and soy products, which can prevent healthy thyroid function. While I understand this takes a huge effort on your part, it can make a real difference. Click on my healthy diet plan for more information.
