How can you support the body during high levels of stress?

Q. Dear Terry, “How can you support the body during high levels of stress?” – Jason A., Burlington, VT

A. Dear Jason, Excessive stress and chronic stress both place extra demands on our adrenal glands, which can cause adrenal dysfunction. To function at their optimal level, the adrenals require an array of necessary nutrients. To support and repair the adrenals, natural ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, and other supportive nutrients are incredibly beneficial. These ingredients work together to help repair the adrenal glands, as well as support the body’s ability to respond to numerous stressors in a healthy manner, which helps restore optimal adrenal function. I would take 200 mg of vitamin C, 10 mg of vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal-5-phosphate), 100 mg of pantothenic acid, 450 mg of freeze-dried adrenal extract, 450 mg of L-tyrosine, 125 mg of licorice root extract, 75 mg of rehmannia extract, 15 mg of pregnenolone, and 10 mg of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone). I would take these ingredients daily.

I also recommend taking two potent, adaptogenic herbs: rhodiola and ashwagandha. Adaptogens work by increasing our ability to respond to stress in a more balanced manner. They also support strength, stamina, and energy without being stimulants. I suggest taking 500 mg of these two herbs three times daily.

Additionally, you may also want to consider red ginseng to help improve energy levels, as fatigue can be a common side effect of stress. Ginseng is one of the world’s oldest adaptogens and can help with physical and mental energy. I prefer ginseng that is cultivated using hydroponic techniques, which helps increase the levels of naturally occurring and highly sought-after compounds, called noble ginsenosides. I would take 200 mg of ginseng twice per day.

Please be patient – it may take several months, but you will feel a difference.

Healthy Regards!
