Q. Dear Terry, “How can we treat C. diff infections naturally?”– Susan B., Allentown, PA
A. Dear Susan, An infection with Clostridioides difficile (also known as C. diff) is a very serious condition that can occur after hospitalization or antibiotic usage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified C. diff as one of the top superbugs in the United States. Superbugs are definitely a growing concern due to the overuse of many antibiotics. Because bacteria can develop resistance – even to the strongest antibiotics we currently have – we need to boost our own natural defenses.
I believe that cinnamon, thyme, clove, and oregano oils—some of nature’s most powerful antibacterial ingredients—would help to further boost the body’s natural defenses against infections. I would take these two or three times per day.
Look for concentrated plant oils that are approved for internal use. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity, and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
I also think that propolis is a safe and effective natural antibacterial and also a strong antiviral and antifungal. Perhaps one of the most important uses of propolis today is fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Propolis is so powerful it can even stop methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Make sure you choose a propolis that comes from a controlled and managed bee population so the material provides consistent levels of bacteria and virus fighting compounds. Look for a clinically studied propolis that is purified and contains no beeswax. I would take propolis three times a day for a month, then once a day thereafter.
Additionally, probiotics can be very useful for any type of infection, especially when antibiotics have been prescribed. Probiotics, which are the healthy bacteria, can be very useful for reestablishing bacteria balance. There are many probiotics on the market, but the kind I prefer are human strains, meaning they are found in our digestive system already. Three probiotic strains I recommend are Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum. I would take these once or twice daily.
