Every time I eat I feel terrible.
Q. Dear Terry, “Every time I eat I feel terrible. My stomach is bloated, I have gas and everything just feels heavy on my stomach. Is there a natural product that can help me feel better?” — Phyllis D., Miami, FL
A. Dear Phyllis, While I do have some suggestions, I would first recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner, if you have not already done so to rule out any underlying conditions that may be causing the symptoms you are experiencing. If underlying illness is ruled out, I have the following recommendations:
I think one of the most important steps to take in stopping digestive problems is to switch to a natural diet high in fat and protein, and low in carbohydrate content. Sometimes called the Paleolithic Diet, I refer to this way of eating as a “traditional diet”. To read more about my recommendations for nutrition, click on my healthy diet plan.
I also recommend adding a digestive enzyme formula to your daily supplement regimen. Supplementing with pancreatin, a natural digestive enzyme complex that provides the enzymes protease, lipase, and amylase, can make all the difference. Pancreatic enzymes simply help your body do what it already does naturally. I recommend taking 1 or 2 tablets of pancreatin with each meal. Make sure that when choosing a formula, you get an undiluted pancreatin supplement. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) has set strict definitions for the level of activity – measured by how effectively the enzyme breaks down its targeted nutrient type – for pancreatin. I believe the best results for improving digestion come from full strength, undiluted pancreatin. Less potent pancreatin has often been diluted with salt, lactose or galactose.
You might also want to consider adding a concentrated essential oil blend to your daily regimen. Look for a formula that contains Basil, Peppermint, Coriander, Cumin, Bay, Caraway and Lemon oils. This blend of oils provides excellent support for gas relief, indigestion, bloating, nausea, symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and vomiting. I recommend taking 1 softgel of this essential oil blend after each meal. When choosing a formula, make sure it features concentrated plant oils that have been laboratory tested to accurately identify elements of their natural chemical composition. Unlike essential oils used for massage and aromatherapy, these plant oils are tested and “fingerprinted” based on specific molecular makeup, species, marker compounds, purity and safety for internal medicinal use. The extraordinary potency of these tested plant oils allows for relatively low doses, but very powerful health benefits.
