Are there any natural ingredients that can prevent another stroke in the future?
Q. Hello Terry, “My mother had her first stroke about 6 months ago. She is 80 years old and otherwise in good health. The stroke was very unexpected and fortunately she was hospitalized shortly after it happened. Are there any natural ingredients that can prevent another stroke in the future?” — Craig D., Pueblo, CO
A. Dear Craig, I think the most powerful natural medicine to help with stroke recovery is curcumin. Curcumin is able to cross the blood brain barrier and exert its benefits precisely where it’s needed. Strokes can cause a lot of inflammation and injury to the brain, which is very sensitive to oxidative damage. Curcumin is the most potent, natural anti-inflammatory and can calm down the residual inflammation. Additionally, curcumin is able to stimulate the production of new brain cells, a process called neurogenesis. This is ground-breaking because the old train of thought was that we were born with a finite number of brain cells or neurons.
Make sure you choose a curcumin that features excellent absorption and has been proven in published human studies. The best form I have ever found uses curcumin blended with turmeric essential oil in a patented process.
I would take 750 mg of curcumin twice per day.
Another ingredient I think would be incredibly useful is grape seed extract. Scientific studies have found that grape seed extract helps prevent blood clots from forming, lowers blood pressure, and shields blood vessels and arteries from free radical damage, which are all crucial for stroke recovery. There are many grape seed extracts available, but the one I prefer comes from France. This French grape seed extract contains OPCs that are small and easily absorbed and utilized by the body. Many extracts contain tannins, which are too large to be effectively absorbed and don’t contribute to your health the same way that OPCs do.
I would take 400 mg three times per day.
Additionally, I would take 100 mg of mesoglycan per day. Mesoglycan does what drugs cannot – it repairs and rebuilds our blood vessels.
You may also want to consider adding vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) as studies have shown that low vitamin D levels can significantly increase your risk for stroke.
