Magnesium, I personally believe, is probably more important than calcium in terms of how it impacts the health of the body, although magnesium and calcium along with potassium can significantly lower blood pressure. Magnesium regulates over 300 different enzyme systems in the body and has a powerful effect regulating heart function. It also controls tics, tremors and the relaxation of muscles. People who have restless legs when sleeping can experience significant benefits supplementing with P-5-P and magnesium. Magnesium is an excellent anti-stress mineral or for those who experience excessive nervousness. When someone jumps from the slightest noise or is frightened easily, look for a magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker reducing plaque from the arteries and it supports the entire cardiovascular function. Some of the symptoms associated with magnesium deficiency are grouped as neuromuscular disturbances; Tetany (involuntary contraction of muscles), convulsions, ataxia (failure of muscular coordination), and tremors, behavioral disturbances, depression, irritability, and psychosis. Increased risk of magnesium deficiency can be seen in individuals who are taking diuretics and those who drink alcohol excessively. Toxicity of magnesium is rare since large quantities are hydroscopic and will cause diarrhea. Upon increasing your magnesium content, if you experience diarrhea, just reduce the dosage to avoid causing diarrhea. For many people magnesium is an excellent laxative. It is safe, can be regulated easily by the symptoms and does not cause any harsh purging of the colon. Many herbal laxatives or prescription drugs cause diarrhea by irritating the lining of the colon.
How do we know if we are getting too much magnesium? what are some signs? I have had my husband on the magnesium lactate by standard process for a few weeks now and he is starting to get really thirsty at night and in the AM’s. Could he be getting too much? He is taking about 420mgs per day.
Also~ If we are taking 50mgs of iodine per day with L-tyrosine, how do we know when we are getting too much of that? Can we get too much?
Dear Lisa,
The daily average level of magnesium for a male is 400 mg. Magnesium lactate is an excellent source and I don’t think that would create an overdose. You could always eliminate the magnesium for a few weeks and see if there is any change in the level of thirst. Is he getting too much magnesium? I doubt that would be a possibility at the level he is taking. Many forms of magnesium can have a laxative effect and that would provide you with an indication that either the dietary source is not the right source for the individual or may be too much. Many forms of magnesium are hydroscopic raising the level of water in the colon forming a watery loose stool. The more common ones that cause a water stool is magnesium citrate and oxide. The magnesium may be pulling more water into the colon and raising the requirement of water. It doesn’t hurt to increase the level as most people are dehydrated without knowing it.
Iodine and tyrosine are very safe and it is difficult to reach a level that would be too much. With that being said, you don’t need to go to high levels to accomplish good health. Most alternative physicians prescribe for their patients a minimum of 50 mg of iodine for four months and then 12.5 mg a day thereafter. One of the world’s experts in iodine therapy, Dr. David Brownstein, routinely gives his patients 50 mg daily and up to as much as 200-300 mg if he feels they are in need. Keep in mind that this is monitored by a physician, but I wanted to point out that his dosage range is many times more than yours and still without side effects.
Healthy regards,
