Did you know that one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory medicines can be found by scraping the bark of a tree? In ancient times, this special resin extract was known as frankincense. Today it is better known as “boswellia” and we are finally beginning to understand why it is helpful in treating everything from irritable bowel to cancer. In this Terry Talks Nutrition®, I’d like to focus on boswellia’s ability to help those with asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
Considered one of the most beneficial herbs, boswellia (Boswellia serrata) deserves special merit. Native to India, the boswellia tree thrives in very dry environments. Traditionally, resin from the tree is considered the medicinal part of the plant, and gathering it is a very ‘hands-on’ form of harvesting, bearing some resemblance to collecting sap to make syrup from sugar maples. When the bark of the tree is scraped, it secretes a resin called “tears.” The resulting gum from these tears is what has long been known as frankincense.
Boswellia can assist in a broad spectrum of respiratory complaints. It opens airways, reduces bronchial and sinus swelling, and helps relieve the worst of allergy symptoms. And the best part is, the high-AKBA boswellia extract I recommend does all of this with no side effects. Whether your concern is asthma, allergies, COPD, or just seasonal respiratory colds, the right boswellia extract can make a big difference.
Asthma is a chronic condition that is all too common. There are multiple causes of asthma, and they often work together in ways that aren’t completely understood. An asthma attack can be triggered by a number of things: pollen and allergies, dust, cold air, nervousness or tension, exercise, or pollution. Some individuals are more prone to asthma than others, so genetics may play a part in this, too.
When someone has an asthma attack, their bronchial airways narrow and tighten. The inflammation produces mucous, which adds to the “out of breath” feeling. Severe attacks can be very frightening, and unfortunately, the anxiety over possible attacks can make even mild symptoms much worse.
While there are medications that alleviate symptoms, they can also bring about a number of side-effects, including agitation, aggression, or depression.
How Boswellia Helps:
Boswellia is effective for a variety of health conditions and diseases because, as different from one another as IBS and asthma may seem, they share one thing in common: inflammation. Inflammation, along with oxidative stress (free radical damage) is one of the primary causes of virtually every disease.
Boswellia is a specific inhibitor of 5-LOX, an enzyme that activates leukotrienes, which induce inflammation. Leukotrienes are responsible for many of the symptoms of asthma. Although other botanical compounds do relieve inflammation, many of them do so as antioxidants. They reduce oxidative stress and damage, and in turn, reduce inflammation. And they work well, but aren’t as direct as boswellia, or another of my top botanicals, curcumin (which operates through COX-2 inhibition).
Most specifically, boswellic acids are the compounds responsible for the botanical’s effects. The most active of the boswellic acids is known as AKBA (Acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acids).

While I am not telling you to throw away your inhaler and take boswellia instead, the good news is that clinical studies with boswellia have been very positive.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-week clinical study, boswellia was tested in 40 individuals with asthma, ranging from 18 to 75 years old and a mix of 23 men and 17 women. At the end of the study, 70% showed marked improvement!

In another clinical study, boswellia was one of three botanicals in a combination that showed similar results. In this placebo-controlled study, 63 patients were divided into two groups; one received the herbal combination [boswellia, licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and tumeric root (Curcuma longa)], the other a placebo. At the end of the 4 week study, the herbal group showed a statistically significant drop in leukotriene levels and other inflammatory markers compared to the placebo group.
I have often recommended boswellia with a high-absorption curcumin extract, so these results don’t surprise me a bit. If you do use a combination, make sure you get a curcumin extract that is micronized and blended with turmeric oils for better absorption. In fact, it has up to 10 times the absorption of standard curcumin extracts, making it much more effective.
That brings me to a point about boswellia – it’s important to select the right boswellia extract.
Not all boswellia products are created equal. AKBA, a very important boswellic acid that is strongly anti-inflammatory, can have levels as low as 1% in unstandardized boswellia products. To make sure you get the best, look for boswellia standardized to at least 10% AKBA. Also, researchers found that one of the boswellic acids, called “beta boswellic acid,” is actually PRO-inflammatory – clearly the last thing you want when dealing with asthma.

The best products are purified with the beta boswellic acid filtered out to less than 5% of the extract. Unstandardized products can be as much as 25%, so it’s important to know what to look for! Plus, making sure your boswellia extract meets these standards ensures that you’ll see results similar to those found in clinical studies.
Aside from asthma, boswellia should be one of your seasonal solutions for sinusitis and allergies as well.
Many of the same conditions that cause asthma reactions cause both of these conditions. For people with chronic sinusitis, boswellia presents a real chance to break out of that cycle of infections, by reducing the irritation and inflammation that can bring about allergy and sinus reactions in the first place.
Anyone who suffers from allergic rhinitis, better known as “hay fever”, knows that the physical discomforts of seasonal flare-ups are a real problem. In any given year, over 17 million adults and almost 9 million American children are diagnosed. And, even though we often dismiss the sneezing, runny nose, and discomfort as “just allergies”, Americans take over-the-counter and prescription drugs each year to overcome them. Unfortunately, those conventional approaches usually bring a lot of unwelcome side effects, including jitteriness, fatigue, mental fog, and irritability. I’ve known many people who, by the end of allergy season, start to consider these synthetic “cures” worse than the “disease”.
Fortunately, boswellia can help here, too. For the same reasons that it does so well for those with asthma, boswellia has great promise for anyone with allergies.
In an allergic response, the body produces compounds that attach themselves to immune system cells called mast cells. When this happens, the mast cells release large amounts of histamine. The histamine reaction creates swelling and induces more inflammation, redness, and itching.
Scientific study has shown that boswellia can inhibit the action of mast cells, which respond to triggers by releasing histamine. Plus, the very fact that boswellia does such excellent work keeping inflammation at bay makes it a perfect botanical to reduce the sinus pressure and swelling that often make allergy flare-ups so miserable.
For many people, it’s a stuffy nose or a runny nose, or the irritating combination of both that signal the sinusitis as a result of an allergic attack. If you’ve experienced sinus pain, you know how serious a case of sinusitis can be, and how it can completely sideline you. Here again, you are not alone, because 37 million Americans are affected by sinusitis each year. For many people, the conventional choices for sinus relief are not attractive. Like allergy medicines, many synthetic drugs for sinuses either cause jitteriness or grogginess. A high-AKBA boswellia extract like the one I recommend can make a big difference without the side effects.
COPD
And, for those struggling with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), boswellia offers hope, too. Emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and other troublesome respiratory symptoms are triggered, in part, by the human leukocyte elastase (also abbreviated “HLE”). So, not only does someone feel as though they can’t get a “full breath” of air, they may notice more mucus adding to the “drowning” feeling that these conditions bring on.
Fortunately, research shows that boswellia also specifically inhibits this leukocyte, reducing the likelihood of the body’s reaction that causes this response.
Boswellia and Leading Research – New Frontiers
When we hear the word “inflammation” we typically think about sore muscles or allergic responses. Inflammation at a cellular level is associated with virtually every disease state in the body. It certainly contributes to the growth of tumors by over-exciting the very bio-mechanisms that are intended to keep the body healthy.
Aside from its incredible strength as an anti-inflammatory agent for respiratory health, research has previously shown that high-AKBA boswellia suppresses the activation of NF-kB, a protein complex that under the duress of inflammation, promotes the growth of tumor cells.
When cancer cells flourish, it is due to a process called “methylation”. Essentially, it circumvents our body’s own defense mechanisms by silencing certain genes that are designed to suppress tumors.
My friend and colleague, Dr. Ajay Goel, has explored the ability of this high-AKBA boswellia extract to inhibit the growth of tumors in colorectal cells. He found that this extract induces DNA demethylation, so it can potentially prevent aberrant cell division. (DNA methylation is responsible for much of the improper cell growth that leads to tumor formation.) Overall, the high-AKBA boswellic extract inhibited cell proliferation, decreased cancer cell viability, and decreased clonogenic (the mutated cells that create tumors) survival. In fact, this extract can actually reactivate tumor-suppressing genes, which can put the body on a path toward healing itself.
This is extremely exciting news – and it shows that we are just beginning to appreciate the full benefits of this astounding botanical.
Breathe Easy and Live Better with Boswellia!
Respiratory problems can really sideline a person. After all, if you don’t feel like you can breathe, how active do you want to be? The right boswellia extract can truly make a difference. It inhibits the triggers that cause these problems in the first place, and does it without the side effects of common synthetic drugs. Plus, boswellia relieves inflammation throughout the body, and may even stop tumors in their tracks.
Be sure to look for a boswellia extract that provides 500 mg of Boswellia serrata gum resin extract standardized to contain 70% total organic and boswellic acids with 10% AKBA. And, be certain that it contains less than 5% beta-boswellic acids, too. This is the right ratio for a strong – yet natural – boswellia extract. This way, you’ll get all of the impressive benefits of boswellia for vibrant, optimal health.
With all of that going for it, you owe it to your health to enjoy this amazing gift from nature and breathe a little easier.

Worried about catching a cold or flu? Or have you already noticed symptoms? You CAN beat a cold or flu. Just follow some simple, natural, and effective steps, and you’ll sail through the season and feel great!

When you need to fight a cold and flu, that last thing you need are additional side effects. Plus, many of the conventional medicines available have questionable benefits, and may actually weaken your immune system’s ability to fend off seasonal invaders.
Fortunately, there are powerful, natural ingredients that can make a huge difference – many of them for children and adults. These strong cold and flu fighters:
As you know, we are approaching the peak of cold and flu season. This year seems especially bad, and each day the news talks about more and more reported cases of the flu.
Clearly, flu shots aren’t doing the trick. In fact, I would say we have made cold and flu prevention much more complicated than it needs to be. Finding effective, sensible, and natural ways to get through the season is the topic of this Terry Talks Nutrition®.
Why in the Winter?
You may wonder why colds and flus seem so prevalent in the winter. There are a few reasons for this. First, more people are inside and in close quarters with others who may be infected. It’s hard to avoid getting ill in a situation like that.
Also, as winter begins, we’re at the height of the holiday season, and many people find that to be a stressful time. Stress runs our system down, and makes us much more susceptible to viruses, too.
But one of the more overlooked reasons for colds and flus during the winter is simply dry air.
Viruses love dry air – they survive much better in it. That’s one of the reasons that people who travel by air tend to get sick, too – airplane air is notoriously dry. This dry air is actually very damaging to your sinus passages. In fact, if you looked at a microscopic image of your mucus membranes once they’ve become dry, it would remind you of the Grand Canyon!
Viruses quickly and easy infect dry tissues. The cracked surfaces give them easy entry into the body, and the nasal passages are one of the best entry points. In fact, your nose is probably the fastest and easiest way to get anything into your body. Just look at the fact that many of the vaccines are nasal sprays. And many drug addicts could tell you how fast they notice a difference by using that route, too.
In any case, 77% of the germs and viruses we encounter enter through the nose. So keeping yours well lubricated and healthy will go a long way in protecting you against the flu. For this, I would suggest going to your favorite health food store and buying a good herbal ointment. Once or twice a day, use a cotton swab or your little finger and apply the ointment to your nasal passages.
Skip the Flu Shot!
The flu shot is one of the biggest frauds to come out of our health care system. Not only is the flu vaccine generally ineffective, it can actually harm you. Consider this – this year, scientists at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota said:
Not exactly a ringing endorsement. So what’s behind the big push for these vaccines? The fact that drug companies make over $2.5 billion dollars a year on the top 10 best-selling flu vaccines probably answers that question.
Avoid Antibiotics
Aside from the flu shot, antibiotics are one of the most over-used medicines out there. They are prescribed for 60% of colds despite the fact that only 2% of colds have bacterial involvement. After all, colds and flus are caused by viruses!
The problem with antibiotics is that they kill off the friendly bacteria in your intestines (where the majority of your immune system truly resides) that keep you safe from viral infections and bad bacteria in the first place. The antibiotics actually make a cold worse!
Plus, the over-prescription of antibiotics has led to bacterial resistance, meaning this potentially valuable medicine won’t work when it’s really needed.
Simplest Way to Prevent the Cold and Flu
You know what the easiest way is to avoid colds and flu? Wash your hands! That’s right – it’s that simple. That’s because our hands encounter surfaces and situations all day that can lead to colds and flus. Bacteria and viruses can live for hours on restaurant tables, door knobs, and hand railings – just about everywhere. And 80% of infectious diseases are transmitted by touch, so frequent, effective washing can make a big difference, cutting your risk by 50% or more!
You don’t need fancy “antibacterial” soap. Just regular soap, running water, and rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds.
One other thing to note – washing frequently is always a good idea when you’re in close quarters with anyone else who is ill. A cough or sneeze can spray germs up to 6 feet away! Also, try to keep your fingers away from your eyes, nose, and mouth – they’re all entry points for bacteria and viruses.
Basic Immune System Support
Our immune systems were designed to take care of us and kill off bacteria and viruses. If we find ourselves susceptible to every bug that comes along, it could mean that something is a bit off in our regular routine. The basic things that keep the immune system strong are:
Nutrients for Extra Immune System Support
Of course, even the healthiest among us needs to give their immune system a boost now and then. With the height of cold and flu season coming on, I’d suggest a few nutrients that truly make a difference.
Vitamin D: Most people don’t get the vitamin D they need, especially in northern climates where exposure to sunlight is at a minimum in the winter. Adults with low vitamin D levels are twice as likely to experience upper respiratory tract infection. Children with low vitamin D levels actually reduce their risk of a cold and flu by 50% once they start taking a strong vitamin D supplement.
But again, the recommendations for vitamin D have historically been far too low. Adults should get 5,000 IU of vitamin D each day – especially in the winter. For children, I’d recommend a 2,500 IU level each day. The best part is, you can usually find high quality vitamin D supplements in a good-tasting chewable tablet.
Immune Boosting Combination #1: I have two immune-boosting combinations that I highly recommend to keep your natural defenses at their best. The first, combines elderberry (Sambucus nigra) withmixed bioflavonoids to destroy bacteria, viruses, and strengthen the immune system. It also contains zinc, which is a required nutrient for T-lymphocyte (white blood cell) activity and can double the size of the thymus gland, which shrinks with age, making us more prone to viruses. Along with these ingredients, the combination includes vitamins A, C, D, calcium, and magnesium to further strengthen the immune system. These nutrients will fight off colds, flus, and even shingles. You can find out more about them in my article, “Fighting Shingles, Respiratory Infections, and Viruses Naturally”.
Immune Boosting Combination #2: The second immune-boosting combination I recommend also includes elderberry along with black currant (Ribes nigrum) to destroy invading bacteria and viruses. It includes zinc, the thymus builder, but adds selenium for synergistic power.
Another powerhouse ingredient is the probiotic Lactobacillus sporogenes, a very hardy species that resists stomach acid, is heat-stable, and tolerates being encapsulated. It will help you resist bad bacteria. Along with the probiotic, I recommend lactoferrin. Lactoferrin stops viruses from attaching to host cells. Lactoferrin has also been shown to strengthen the immune system increasing the production of inborn antibodies that work to fight infection. In fact, one study showed a 95% success rate in preventing the cold virus from attacking living cells. To find out more about these amazing nutrients in combination, see my article, “How the Immune System Keeps Us Healthy”.
So What About Vitamin C?
I think vitamin C is excellent for the immune system! But, don’t try to rely on oranges to get you through the season. You need a supplemental form. That’s because the typical recommended dose of Vitamin C for cold/flu is 500 mg, one or more times daily. Compare that to a medium-sized orange that has only 53 mg of vitamin C, meaning you’d need to eat 10 oranges to get 500 mg.
The problem is, 10 oranges also have 106 grams of sugar, topping off at over 420 calories! That is just an unacceptable load of sugar when the immune system is already compromised trying to fight a cold or flu. A supplement is a must.
Have Symptoms of Cold or Flu? Don’t Worry!
Let’s say you’ve already started to experience some of the tell-tale symptoms of a cold or flu. Don’t worry – there are strong natural ingredients that can help here, too. There are two clinically-tested herbs that are a must.
If you start to experience symptoms , Andrographis (Andrographis paniculata) decreases cold and flu symptoms with no adverse effects. It is especially good at reducing the intensity of symptoms, including sore throats and runny noses.
The other herb I recommend, Pelargonium sidoides, also known as Umckaloabo, is well-known as a strong antiviral, antibacterial, and expectorant. In a clinical trial of individuals with a cold, it doubled the reduction of symptoms compared to those using a placebo. After 10 days, 80% of those in the Pelargonium group were cured versus only 30% in the placebo group.
This is a great combination to take at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms to help get you back on track much sooner. I suggest a 280mg combination of these ingredients daily. To find out more about these amazing herbs, see my article “How to Banish Bacteria and Vanquish Viruses”.
Concentrated Plant Oils are Natural Flu Fighters!
Concentrated plant oils are very potent – up to 100 times stronger than extracts. In fact, several tons of plant material may be necessary to yield just one liter (33 oz.) of concentrated oil.
Almost every concentrated plant oil has some anti-viral, antibacterial and antifungal activity, but some I would definitely recommended for fighting off the cold and flu. They are:
Because concentrated plant oils are so powerful, you don’t need much to notice a big difference – a typical dosage is just one or two softgels a day.
Relief for Coughing and Congestion
Coughs and chest congestion are two of the most frustrating symptoms of colds and flus. The best natural combination is Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and Ivy (Hedra helix). They aren’t cough suppressants, but they reduce the thickness of mucus and make coughs more efficient, so you clear out the mucus and cough less.
These herbs also fight bacteria and viruses, preventing infections from taking hold in the lungs. Best yet, they are safe for adults and children alike. For more about this combination, see my article, “Nature’s Answer for Colds, Bronchitis, and Asthma”.
You CAN Beat the Cold and Flu Season!
Remember, your best way to avoid a cold or flu is to practice good habits every day. Eat right, get your sleep, exercise and minimize stress. And, I can’t emphasize this enough – wash your hands!
Before the season starts, keep your immune system running strong with vitamin D, Elderberry, and other immune-boosting nutrients. If you do get a cold or flu, try the herbal and concentrated plant oil combinations I’ve recommended, and your symptoms will be much less severe, and you’ll feel better much faster. You CAN beat the cold and flu season without risks and side effects. It just takes a natural, common sense approach.

We cannot live without oxygen. Our respiratory tract is the crucial link that takes the air we breathe and shepherds it into the bloodstream. The bronchial tract, or “bronchi”, is a fine system of tubes, where incoming air is passed along to approximately 500 million air cells. Technically known as alveoli, these cells ensure that the blood is able to absorb oxygen and distribute it throughout the body.
But this system is very sensitive. Dust, bacteria, and viruses are normally kept at bay by cilia – very fine, hair-like projections in the mucous membranes that keep the respiratory system moist and running smoothly. At least most of the time.
However, when germs or bacteria reach the bronchi, the mucosa can become inflamed, causing bronchitis. This inflammation triggers the bronchi to increase mucus production as a way of protecting itself. Unfortunately, the excessive mucus makes breathing tough and causes heavy coughing. Plus, the mucus lodged in the bronchi provides an ideal environment for harmful bacteria to multiply. When this happens, the bronchial tract is under siege and needs help.
But standard cough and cold remedies aren’t always ideal, due to problem ingredients, such as alcohol, or sedative side effects. Fortunately, nature has an answer.
For many people, climbing ivy (Hedra helix) can be a pesky problem. As anyone with a garden knows, it can overtake your yard and home if not cut back frequently. But medicinally, it has remarkable benefits. Ivy leaf extract is a clinically proven cough medicine that is an excellent choice for anyone with bronchitis and/or asthma. Ivy has unique modes of action: as an expectorant, it helps bring up mucus from the lungs; as a mucolytic, it helps dissolve mucus; and as a bronchial dilator, it helps open up passageways so you breathe easier.
And unlike many conventional solutions, it can be used by children. In fact, in a recent study, a survey of 52,470 children confirmed a high level of tolerability of ivy leaf’s active ingredients.
Ivy leaf extract reduces and calms troublesome and painful coughing, but does not completely or artificially block the action. It also causes thick mucus to become liquefied and the respiratory tract to be less constricted. This is important because it allows the individual to readily cough up mucus to make breathing and expectoration easier and less painful. As a result, the urge to cough caused by the excessive production of thick mucus is also reduced. Clinical studies have documented that this highly specialized ivy extract is an effective and extremely well tolerated herbal medicine recommended for respiratory tract disorders, including asthma, in all age groups.
Many popular European formulations that relieve bronchitis, asthma, cough and other respiratory disorders combine herbal ingredients to be even more effective. And that’s something I recommend in this case, too.
Along with ivy leaf extract, thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is an effective partner. Compounds in thyme – primarily the phenols thymol and carvacrol – provide its antitussive (preventing and treating a cough), antispasmodic, and expectorant (thinning the mucus to allow for coughing out) actions.
Thyme, when combined with ivy, continues to be one of the most popular and commonly recommended herbal blends in Europe for dry spasmodic coughs, and due to its overall safety, it is a favorite for treating coughs in children. People who are required to take several medications at the same time can use ivy leaf extract and thyme without concern due to the fact that the medicines are extremely well tolerated and no interactions are yet known.
Breathing is something so basic that we tend to take it for granted – until it becomes difficult. The good news is you can choose natural and effective ingredients that don’t have the side effects of conventional or over-the-counter approaches. That is why I recommend a formula containing ivy leaf extract and thyme extract whenever you have a cold, sore throat, bronchitis or upper respiratory congestion.
