Supplementation with Vitamins C and E May Increase Eradication of Helicobacter Pylori

In this study, researchers evaluated whether adding vitamins C and E to standard triple therapy increases the eradication rate of Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori). The study included 120 patients in an out-patient treatment facility exhibiting H. pylori-positive non-ulcer dyspepsia and low total antioxidant capacity. Patients in group A (n=80) were given a Standard Therapy (ST) of lansoprazole (30mg, BID), amoxicillin (1000mg, BID), and clarithromycin (500mg, BID) for 14 days, as well as antioxidant supplementation (AS) of vitamin C (500mg, BID) and vitamin E (200 IU, BID), for 30 days. Patients in group B (n=40) were given ST for 14 days. Total antioxidant capacity was lower than normal in all patients, however patients receiving AS in addition to ST achieved a higher percentage of H. pylori eradication in contrast to the group receiving ST only, indicating that Vitamins C and E may increase the eradication rate of H. Pylori and may be an effective adjunct to conventional treatment in patients with H. pylori and non-ulcer dyspepsia.
