Garlic: A Simple Way to Protect Your Heart

September 7, 2012

Garlic (Allium sativum) is known worldwide. As an ingredient, it is beloved for its rich, savory flavor and pungent aroma.  Adding garlic to a meal seems to bring it up to another level. This wonderful plant, known by some as “the stinking rose”, even has an annual festival dedicated to it in Gilroy, California.

It’s one of my favorites, and I try to eat garlic on a regular basis.

However, I think a lot of people have mixed feelings about garlic – they love it with meals, but it certainly has its drawbacks.

For one thing, it takes a lot of garlic to get healthy benefits – and after a while, only so many people are going to want to stand next to you if you eat that much every day. After all, it didn’t get the nickname “stinking rose” for nothing.

So, when I found that I could get the benefits of four cloves of fresh garlic in a once-daily supplement, I jumped at the chance.

Now it is very likely that you’ve heard about the many benefits of garlic, most of them relating to heart health. Maybe the good news about garlic seems a bit old hat. But it really shouldn’t.

After all, heart disease isn’t going away soon. Of course, we need to improve our sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits as a first major step in being heart healthy.  But while garlic’s virtues are well known, they should be respected, too.

In this Terry Talks Nutrition®, we’re going to review some of the best attributes of garlic and explore the reasons why having a simple supplemental solution can give you the garlic you need without the bad breath and inconvenience that you don’t.

Type 2 Diabetes is a Full Blown Epidemic

It has been estimated that over one-third of the adult population of America is diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and treated with Metformin.  Another one-third of the population experiences Type 2 diabetes but not officially diagnosed and treated.  Because the increase in obesity and general population overweight results in fatty liver disease and, therefore, the inability to manage proper blood sugar levels.  Metformin, the prescribed medication, was originally derived from a natural substance.  Unfortunately, it is now synthesized and no longer represents a natural substance.  However, two natural substances, a combination of purslane and mulberry leaf extract in approximately 1,000 mg dosage, when taken together, based on a recent study, are 27-30% more effective than Metformin and no side effects.  But always consult with your physician.

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

When Things Are Out of Control

Every day, we have opportunities to get upset, be frustrated, or get offended. Maybe you had plans that didn’t work out, or someone was rude to you at the office. Maybe you were doing something that should have taken one hour and it ended up taking three. Life is full of inconveniences, but even though we can’t always control our circumstances, we can control our reaction. I heard somebody say, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond.”

We should always go out each day with a positive attitude, full of hope and expecting God’s favor. But at the same time, we should recognize that most days are not going to go exactly as we plan. Remember, we were created to live in peace. Peace is our position of power. If you get stressed because you got off schedule or upset because your child wouldn’t eat his breakfast, or frustrated because somebody offended you, what you’re doing is giving away your power. Instead, make the decision to release those offenses and disappointments so you can live in peace and enjoy the day as the blessing God prepared for you!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, today I release every care, concern, offense and disappointment to You. I choose to keep the peace that You have given me. I look forward to today knowing that You are with me, leading me in victory in Jesus’ name! Amen.
