Two quotes I have heard all my life regarding beauty are: “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “Pretty is as pretty does,” meaning ugly actions render even a beautiful person unattractive. I agree with this folk wisdom! But a big topic for debate is the definition of human physical beauty in the first place. I would suggest to you that many elements of what we consider “beauty” are in fact external indicators of health status. Just think of how we view thick, lustrous hair compared to thin, dull hair, or clear, well-toned skin vs. dry, irritated skin, or even strong, well-formed fingernails as opposed to misshaped, cracked nails. In each case, the ideal of beauty is also the healthier of the two choices.
In this issue of Terry Talks Nutrition, we are going to look at an element that can improve bone health, tendon strength, and even help to prevent dementia. And that element also contributes to radiant skin, hair and nails. What is this miracle mineral? Silica! Click to Continue...

Q. Dear Terry, “What is the difference between turmeric and curcumin? I was wondering if I would get the same health benefits by just putting turmeric on my food as I would from taking a supplement.”
—Robert R. Oklahoma City, OK
A. Dear Robert, Turmeric refers to the spice that is made from the root of the turmeric plant. It contains several active compounds, including curcumin, which is the compound that has been shown to have the greatest benefits for health. However, generally less than 5% of turmeric is curcumin. While adding turmeric to your food is certainly a great idea, it may well be too weak and too poorly absorbed to be used as a medicinal treatment. It you are trying to address a specific health concern (pain, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, etc) I recommend looking for curcumin as a supplement instead of turmeric. And because curcumin is also poorly absorbed, look for a formula that contains standardized amounts of curcumin with turmeric oil and phospholipids. This will improve absorption up to 10 times better than taking regular curcumin products. However, if you still want to put some extra turmeric spice on your food, go right ahead and enjoy! It is good for you!

Who doesn't love a good sizzle on the grill? Unfortunately, certain cancer-causing compounds are created in the process of grilling beef. These compounds are called heterocyclic amines. Other carcinogens called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are formed when animal fat drips on an open flame or red-hot coals and makes smoke, which drifts up and permeates the meat. Does that mean we have to five up the grill? No, because it turns out that marinating the beef for even 15 minutes in an anti-oxidant rich mixture (beer, wine, olive oil with spices) greatly reduces these compounds, as does flipping the meat frequently. By the way, fruits and vegetables do not form these compounds when grilled, so eat all these you wish!
Run Your Own Race
It's easy to be tempted to go through life competing with everyone around us. When we see someone who's more talented, better looking or has more gifts, instead of running our race and being comfortable with who we are, oftentimes we feel inferior and think, "I've got to catch up to them." The problem with this unhealthy competition is that it's a never-ending cycle. There will always be someone ahead of us. But, it's a very freeing thing when you realize, "I'm not competing with you. I don't have to have as big a house as my neighbor to feel good about myself. I don't have to keep up with my co-worker. I don't have to be a certain size. No, I understand that I'm not in competition with my friend, my neighbor or my co-worker. Instead, I'm going to be the best me that I can possibly be." Friend, that's an attitude God can work with. When you focus on being who God made you to be, that's when you'll rise up higher and position yourself for every spiritual blessing He has in store for you!
Father God, I humbly come to You giving You all that I am. I choose to keep my eyes on You and allow You to work in my heart and mind. I declare that I am free from competition today. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
