Preserving Your Vision - For a Lifetime!
Key Words
macular degeneration, eye strain, eye health, vision, astaxanthin, black currant, antioxidants, Haematococcus pluvial, anthocyanins, prednisolone, retina, cornea, macula, uveitis
They say the eyes are the window to the soul. Our eyes are also our window to the world. Our eyes allow us to read great works of literature and appreciate beautiful art. We can watch the colors of the sunset and make a wish on the Man in the Moon at night. Our eyes allow us to drive a car, hit a softball, and pick our child out of a crowd.
We tend to take our eyes for granted—until we develop a problem. As we get older, we have a harder time seeing in dim light, colors don’t appear as bright as they used to, and maybe it is getting more difficult to drive at night. Not to mention the very small print that suddenly appears on every product label and restaurant menu. These age-related changes to our vision can happen gradually and we may miss the warning signs until the problems are more advanced.
Unfortunately, we also become more vulnerable to diseases of the eye, including dry eyes, cataracts, and glaucoma. We are also more vulnerable to eye strain and fatigue. One of the most frequent causes of vision loss as we grow older is macular degeneration. While it cannot be cured, there are ways to slow or stop its progression and help preserve vision. Two excellent nutrients for this purpose are the natural antioxidants, astaxanthin and black currant, which can be potent interventions for everything from the simple problem of eye strain to the serious disease process of macular degeneration. Let’s talk about the most serious problem first.

Just Ask Terry . . .
Q. Dear Terry, “My aunt (age 70) was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). I’ve been reading and learning more about it because I want to find something to help her. Do you have any suggestions? I know there is no cure.” Tim S., Des Moines, IA`
A. Dear Tim, I am so sorry to hear about your aunt. You are right – there is no cure for this disease. However, there is a lot of new research going on showing that the spice curcumin and vitamin D, when used together, can help reduce the plaques and tangles in the brain that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease. There are new studies just now getting underway to test this in human patients in the early stages of this disease. It may well prove that curcumin and vitamin D in combination can slow the progression of AD. Also, the plant oils from rosemary and Spanish sage are quite helpful for memory and mental function. Both these plant oils help preserve a certain neurotransmitter in the brain called acetylcholine, which is usually deficient in individuals with AD. I suggest a formula that combines all these ingredients. I just wrote about Alzheimer’s disease in a recent newsletter, so check the newsletter archives for more information. Good luck and please extend my best wishes to your aunt.

Terry's healthy comment of the week:
Travel Health Tip: Boost your immune system before you go
Don't dare walk into an airport, train station or other public place without protecting your immune system first. How do you accomplish that? It's simple: For at least three days before your trip, start drinking lots of vegetable juice and taking immune-boosting herbal supplements. It's even better if you're drinking fresh juices every day as a regular habit, but if you're not, at least kick in the healthful juices before you travel.
Today's Word from Joel and Victoria:
The Tongue of the Wise
It's easy to see how words can be used as a weapon. We've all either been "cut" by the words of others, or we've used words to put someone "in their place." The truth of the matter is when we use words recklessly or in a way that cuts others, we are not being wise. The scripture tells us that the tongue of the wise brings life and healing to others.
Today, look for ways to be wise. Find something nice to say about someone or share an encouraging word. You never know how you can bring healing to a person's heart by sharing a kind, gracious word. And remember, words are like seeds. When you plant words of life and blessing into others, you're sure to reap a harvest of blessing in your own life in return.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, today I choose to be wise. I submit my tongue to You and choose to use it for good and not for evil. Show me ways to be a blessing to others. Help me find creative ways to encourage the people You have placed in my life. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
