Q. Dear Terry, “Can you take black cohosh long term?  I was under the impression that you couldn’t.” — Jan C., Birmingham, AL

A. Dear Jan, Yes, you can take black cohosh indefinitely.  Black cohosh is one of the best known natural treatments for the relief of hot flashes, night sweats, and other symptoms of menopause. It was used as a medicinal plant by the Native Americans, and has been the focus of research (and real life use) for over 50 years.

The 6 month recommendation most often cited stems from The German Commission E Monographs, which suggests that individuals follow-up with their physician after six months.  However, more recent studies have shown that there are no significant side effects to long term use.
