Q. Dear Terry, “This isn’t a health question but I hope you will answer it anyway. What is a webinar? I have seen them mentioned on your website. I have never attended a webinar and I don’t really know what it is.” —Martie M., Ashville, NC A. Dear Martie, I am so happy you asked! If you have never attended a webinar before, I’m sure there are many other people who read my newsletter that don’t know what it is, either. Webinars are a fun, easy way to listen to educational events on your computer. The name “webinar” was created as a name for an educational semINAR on the world wide WEB. Instead of sitting in a classroom or lecture hall, you listen and watch a presentation on your computer, in your own home or office. Most webinars have an option of having the sound (audio) delivered to you on your computer speakers, or sometimes you call in on the telephone to hear the speaker’s voice while viewing the presentation on your computer. You may be someone who didn’t like school all that much, but don’t think that webinars are dull and boring! We have been very lucky to have some wonderful educators who have given very interesting and entertaining presentations on a variety of health topics. It is very simple to attend our webinars. If the topic sounds interesting and the time is convenient for you, go to the website and register by entering your name and email address. You will then get instructions for how to join the webinar emailed to you. When it is time for the webinar to occur, open the email you received, click on the link provided, and you will be taken to the website for the webinar. There you enter your name, email address, and the password (from your emailed instructions). The webinar will open and all you have to do is sit back and listen (you might have to install some files on your computer the first time you attend, but it goes quickly and you don’t have to do anything but allow the download to happen). Because it is a live event, you also have a chance to ask questions by typing them into a message box on your computer screen. It might seem a little overwhelming the first time, but really, it is VERY easy to do—even I can do it! We give instructions to help you, and also send you the telephone number for a technical support line so you can call to ask questions if you run into any problems. We also record the webinars so if you can’t attend a live presentation you can come back and listen to the recording whenever you wish.
