Q, Dear Terry, “I am somewhat overweight and have borderline high blood pressure and was just started on a drug. Now I am having problems in the bedroom department. I am ready to toss this drug right out the window. Help!” — George C., Albany, NY

A. Dear George, Sorry to hear of your recent problems. It is true that a common side effect of blood pressure lowering drugs is impairment in sexual function. However, high blood pressure is very dangerous and can cut short your life, so it must be brought down to normal range. I’d encourage you to be open and honest with the person who prescribed your blood pressure drug. Ask him/her if it is safe for you to go on a trial of natural medicine and health interventions. With your doctor’s approval, you could try some of my recommendations and keep monitoring your blood pressure. Start with a supplement that has omega fatty acids from salmon that are attached to phospholipids for the best absorption. One or two tablets a day is all you need, because omega 3s attached to phospholipids absorb about 50 times better than omega 3s in fish oil, which are all attached to triglycerides. Additionally, I wrote an article on a combination of olive leaf extract and hibiscus that is excellent for reducing blood pressure. The article is called The Silent Killer: High Blood Pressure and you can read it on the Terry Talks Nutrition website. I have seen this combination of botanicals work wonders on people trying to get their blood pressure into a more healthy range. I also encourage you to lose some weight. I know this is easier said than done. The good news is that even a very modest weight loss can positively influence your blood pressure. Try eliminating grains and focus on healthy protein, fruit, and vegetables. You don’t have to starve to lose weight! Strive to lose 10 pounds over the course of 3 months, which is only about a pound a week. You will be amazed what the combination of losing some weight, and adding omega 3s from salmon and the botanical blend can do.

Healthy Regards,
