Q. Dear Terry, “I have a very weak immune system. I catch everything that goes around. Is there something you can recommend to strengthen my immune system? And what can I take when I do get a bad cold to keep it from lingering on for weeks?” —Sharon A, Sioux Falls, SD
A. Dear Sharon, First, if you are catching an abnormal amount of colds, flu, etc. you may need to check in with your healthcare professional to determine if there is an underlying cause for your poor immune system function. For example, anemia and type 2 diabetes are sometimes diagnosed from an initial complaint of weak immune system, so first determine if there is an underlying illness. Once you have determined that there isn’t an underlying problem, you can concentrate on nutritionally rebuilding your immune system, and I can recommend several natural products to assist you in this endeavor. You may have to experiment a bit to find exactly the right combination for you, but here are some suggestions to get you started. For daily use, I like a combination of black currant and elderberry, plus zinc, selenium, lactobacillus sporogenes and lactoferrin. All of these ingredients have anti-viral, antibacterial, or immune supportive properties. If you feel the symptoms of a cold or flu coming on, try a combination of two herbs – pelargonium and andrographis. Each of them has been shown in clinical trials to reduce the severity and length of colds and the flu. I also highly recommend chemotyped plant oils. Oil of oregano is an amazing antibacterial oil that can both help protect you against upper respiratory infections and aid in recovering more quickly if you do find yourself getting ill. If you suffer from sinus infections or sinusitis, you may want to try oils from eucalyptus and myrtle. These plant oils help unclog sinuses and help you breath more easily. Make sure you only buy chemotyped plant oils (look for this phrase on the label) as these are the only oils that are tested and safe for internal use. There are many more options for natural immune support out there. Give a few of these suggestions a try and I think you will be amazed at the results.

However, I am interested in two things – cleansing to reset my body system and a program to support my immune system. I want to give my body the best chance possible to get rid of any cancer cells if in fact they did not get it all. Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.” —Steve V, Whitewater, WI
A. Dear Steve, While cleansing is important, I think there are other products you can purchase to help you achieve your health goals. I am not against cleansing. If you are willing to include this expense in your routine that is fine, but it would not be at the top of my list. Instead, I would recommend a combination of immune supporting, anti-cancer ingredients: curcumin, green tea, and resveratrol. All of them have been the subject of studies showing their anti-cancer activity, and curcumin in particular has been the focus of many studies at prestigious places such as the MD Anderson Cancer Center. In fact, there are 38 published studies listed on PUBMED, the electronic medical database of the National Institutes of Health (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) specifically on melanoma and curcumin, showing positive results on melanoma cell destruction and reduction of metastasis. One example is a study published in the International Journal of Cancer examining curcumin’s effects in both in vitro and in vivo (meaning in living systems). I would also choose a powerful combination of antioxidant ingredients (grape seed, pine bark, and selenium are examples of potent antioxidants) to neutralize the free radicals that can damage DNA and lead to formation of cancer cells. And finally I would take high dose vitamin D daily (3,000 – 5,000 IU). A good regimen would be 1500 mg of curcumin on its own in a bioavailable form, 2 capsules three times a day of the curcumin, green tea, resveratrol combination, and an antioxidant formula in addition to the vitamin D. I would do this for 6 months to a year and then reduce the dosage. I realize this could be an expensive program but I truly believe this is a powerful solution and it is what I would do if I were in your situation.
If I were to add one more supplement to this regimen, consider CoQ10. In a study from 2006, researchers found that melanoma cancer survivors with the lowest CoQ10 levels had a much higher rate of recurrence than individuals with adequate to high levels of CoQ10 in their blood. Dosing for regular CoQ10 should be 200 mg per day, or if you prefer, the new bio-identical ubiquinol form of CoQ10 can be taken at 100 mg per day. Q. Dear Terry, “I have fibromyalgia. I have been to therapy and have learned a lot. But after a recent vacation in Mexico I’m having a flare-up. I have severe pain and stiffness, burning sensations in my muscles and joints, my skin is prickly and I’m extremely tired. I’m going to have a few more therapy sessions but is there anything you can suggest that might help me feel better?” —Nicole C, Austin, TX
A. Dear Nicole, You need to support your immune system and reduce any kind of systemic inflammation. I suggest bioavailable curcumin (combined with turmeric oil) which is excellent at reducing inflammation and relieving pain. I recommend a formula that combines curcumin with boswellia, DLPA and nattokinase.
Sometimes parasites can abnormally stimulate the immune system and cause flare ups of fibromyalgia, so if you are not 100% sure of the food and drink you consumed while abroad, I’d recommend you consider using a chemotyped plant oil formula of cinnamon, coriander, clove, oregano, peppermint, and savory. These oils have potent anti-parasite activity, yet have demonstrated human safety. Please make sure to use only chemotyped oils (it should say this on the label) to assure safety and effectiveness. Just follow the label directions, taking a higher dose for 2 weeks, then drop to the lowest dose for another 2 weeks.
